  • Sharp School Services in Hobart is converting its nearly 50-year-old supply store into a school furniture showroom with a liquidation sale now and a full transition by early summer—David’s Fish Department will open at All Pet Supplies in Gary on April 7 and Dollar Tree has started business in Lake Station at the former Sav-A-Lot site. Meanwhile, Family Express in Valparaiso now offers its Java Wave coffee in K-cups for at-home brewing, Save More Foods in Gary is launching a pharmacy today, and other local businesses including Queen Nails, Rusted Knuckles Performance Parts, a new physician practice, and an eyebrow bar have recently opened.  NWI Times

  • Bailey Wojciechowski overcame her childhood hearing loss to pursue a 16-year dance career at Patti's All-American Gymnastics in Dyer—she will soon complete her training with a final recital as a senior at Lake Central High School.  NWI Times
  • Indiana Landmarks — the state’s historic preservation group — will relocate its Northwest Indiana Field Office from Gary’s Miller neighborhood to a Valparaiso home described as a midcentury modern landmark.  NWI Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Conservation coordinator Susan MiHalo explained that neglecting habitat restoration on private and public lands lets invasive plants take over and reduce native species—this change harms local wildlife and ecosystem services. She urged conservation groups and homeowners to work steadily to protect natural habitats and support biodiversity.  NWI Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana residential property owners learned that state lawmakers will not lower 2025 property tax bills because changes are too late in the process. Senate President Rod Bray said homeowners could face a 6—7% increase while House Speaker Todd Huston expects rates to drop in 2026.  NWI Times
  • Officials said the Marquette Greenway project will finish by 2028 — a plan that moves the project closer to completion — as work continues to prepare the area.  NWI Times
