- ➤ KV REMC Junior Board of Directors will host a Suicide Prevention Fun 5K Run/Walk on May 24 at Sunset Hill Farm Park in Valparaiso—registration starts at 9:00 a.m. and the run begins at 10:00 a.m. Participants will pay $20 per person—proceeds will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention-Indiana Chapter. - ➤ At the March 24 city council meeting the council unanimously approved a resolution recommending a downtown liquor license for Cafe Farina, which will move to 55 S. Franklin and open by June with 30 employees working every day — the council also passed an ordinance setting responsible business practice requirements for projects seeking economic tax incentives by raising the qualifying value from $150,000 to $350,000, though Mayor Costas may veto it within ten days. - ➤ Valparaiso has announced 19 Neighborhood Improvement Grants totaling over $167,000 for 2025—funding projects like pollinator gardens, public art sculptures, neighborhood gathering spaces and tree plantings across several city areas. - ➤ Girls wrestling in Northwest Indiana grew as participation increased and the sport was officially sanctioned, with the inaugural state finals held on January 17 at the Corteva Coliseum in Indianapolis. Merrillville High School led with state champion Joy Cantu while Valparaiso High saw its team grow from three to nineteen competitors (showing rising local interest in the sport). NWI.LIFE
