- ➤ Spelling Bowl clubs at Northern Indiana high schools are gaining popularity as students learn over 3,500 challenging words and compete in local, regional, and national meets. Teams such as Chesterton’s and Portage’s hold daily after-school practices for four to five hours per week — their rigorous training shows a strong commitment to academic excellence — as they prepare for upcoming 2025 competitions. - ➤ High schools across Northern Indiana are competing in Speech and Debate this season to build public speaking and critical thinking skills. - ➤ Phoenix Global (a suburban Philadelphia-based metals company) agreed to pay $190,860 in civil penalties for alleged Clean Air Act violations at its Burns Harbor slag processing facility and will install new equipment (to reduce harmful emissions) that will improve air quality for nearby communities. - ➤ Today, NIPSCO + NiSource Charitable Foundation announced the 2025 Environmental Action Grant winners, awarding 23 local nonprofits grants between $500 + $5,000 to fund environmental projects and education in the service area. An expanded grant for Monarch Joint Venture will support pollinator habitat improvements with volunteer activities planned at Pisgah Marsh and other public lands. Valpo Life
