  • PNW Athletics and SAAC hosted Leo’s Spring Fling at the university’s Fitness and Recreation Center where over 170 community members, including those with disabilities, enjoyed dancing, games and family activities. Drake Ballard—a PNW baseball player and Psychology major—organized the event to celebrate Autism Awareness Month and promote inclusion.  Valpo Life
  • VNA Hospice of Northwest Indiana hosted its 23rd annual Stroll for Hospice in downtown Valparaiso on May 4th — a Star Wars-themed community party reorganized due to bad weather. Families, volunteers and veterans were honored as attendees enjoyed games, food and costumed fun in memory of loved ones.  NWI.LIFE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Since 1984, the VEDC has partnered with local businesses, higher education and state groups on projects such as Central Park Plaza and Pratt Industries’ $260 million recycling plant to drive growth in Valparaiso. Its Perfect Place campaign—featured on local buses—promotes a strong business climate that will bring new jobs and a better tax base to the community.  Valpo Life

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Planners are changing their recommendations for U.S. 30 improvements east of Valparaiso with an 'expressway lite' option that allows driveway access. Many residents have asked to keep current access to protect local town character—community office hours will be held on May 20 at the Valparaiso Fire Training Station on Evans Avenue.  Lakeshore Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northwest Health — Porter in Valparaiso has started using a new surgical robot today that gives doctors better precision and shorter operating times during procedures. Surgeons Dr. Andrew Martin and Dr. Jaron Pettis led the first uses of the system, which is the only one of its kind in Northwest Indiana.  Valpo Life
  • Members of the Northwest Indiana Literacy Council donated a mobile lending library to Franciscan Health Crown Point NICU this week so families with infants can read to their babies.
