- ➤ The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority has published the 2025-2026 South Shore Area Guide that lists places to visit and events in Northwest Indiana. The first 50 people who get the guide at the Indiana Welcome Center at 7770 Corinne Drive in Hammond will receive a free swag bag and be entered to win a VIP package for the Gary Air Show on August 9-10—with overnight stays, VIP parking, food vouchers, air show t-shirts and local gifts. - ➤ A developer from Overland Park plans to invest $2 billion in a new data center at the 800-acre Johnson Farm site in Union Township near Wheeler High School. The project is expected to create 125 to 175 permanent jobs and generate $10 million a year in tax revenue, but local residents oppose its location due to concerns over industrial impact—officials will review rezoning and utility upgrades before construction can begin. - ➤ Lake County nonprofits could now apply for a grant as the Legacy Foundation launched its Lake County Resilience Grant on May 15 — the program will provide $600,000 over the next two years to cover up to 25 percent of documented losses with awards up to $40,000 per organization and aims to bolster training in financial planning and leadership to help sustain services amid reduced government funding. - ➤ Starting Monday, State Road 49 will have alternating lane closures between I-94 and U.S. 20 for bridge deck overlay and painting work over the Amtrak tracks, with the left northbound lane and shoulder closed until late May and work continuing through mid-October. The ramp from eastbound I-80/94 to northbound Indianapolis Boulevard will close Monday night at 9:00 p.m. and reopen Tuesday at 5:00 a.m.—weather permitting. Lakeshore Public Media
