COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Edge of Liberty Weekly Farmers Market will be held on May 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at a four-acre farm (606 N Calumet Ave) north of Valparaiso, featuring a market garden, pollinator garden, community garden, walking trails and a bi-monthly craft fair on select Sundays.  PanoramaNOW
  • The Kankakee Valley REMC Junior Board invites locals to join a Day of Community Giving on Saturday, May 30, at Porter County Fairgrounds (a car show and cornhole tournament will support the Play for Jake Foundation as students build leadership skills) where early vehicle entries cost $15 and team entries $20.  Indiana 105
  • A 3-day summer German-style biergarten is underway today at Sunset Hill Farm Park from 3:00 pm to 9:30 pm. The event features Hofbräuhaus beer from Munchen, US craft brews, cider, sausage, pretzels, kids’ activities, and stein hoisting contests (free admission).  PanoramaNOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • About 150 high school students from six local schools attended the first SPARK Summit at Purdue Northwest’s Westville campus in early May. Speakers like INDYCAR driver Charlie Kimball, branding expert Olivia West and LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® leader Matt Jones led hands-on workshops to boost creativity and teamwork.  Valpo Life
  • Governor Mike Braun visited Ivy Tech on Wednesday at the Valparaiso campus to discuss workforce training aimed at meeting local employer needs. He toured learning spaces where students received hands-on instruction in Nursing, HVAC, Welding, and Energy Technology.  Valpo Life
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana has scheduled its summer camp program from early June through early August at eight Club locations. Kids will enjoy daily meals, themed activities and field trips that offer a safe, engaging space for learning and growth.  Valpo Life

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • INDOT said that from noon today, road restrictions will be lifted along highways and interstates where safe, although construction closures remain. Governor Braun urged drivers to plan routes ahead for busy Memorial Day weekend travel near Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Z107.1

  • Franciscan Health is partnering with Sounds of Sarah and Lake County Health Department to offer the free QPR Suicide Prevention Course this summer at Sounds of Sarah located at 2057 W. Glen Park Ave in Griffith from 10 a.m. to noon on June 17 and Aug. 4, with registration required.  NWI.LIFE

    Graceland Cemetery will host its annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Valor Hill, honoring all who have served with a special tribute to veterans laid to rest at Graceland over the past year. Conducted by American Legion Post 94, the free public ceremony will include the reading of each veteran’s name and will move indoors to the mausoleum in the event of rain.
