  • Regional Care Group hosted its third annual gala at Avalon Manor in Merrillville on May 23 to celebrate 50 years of providing mental, social and residential services to Northwest Indiana. Community leaders, local officials and business professionals attended the event, which featured a Louisiana street-style theme and honored pioneers in mental health — a tribute to the group's lasting impact on the community.  Valpo Life
  • Jon Daly grew up and worked in Valparaiso and became assistant fire chief after nearly three decades as a firefighter; he will retire in July and join Porter County Emergency Management as a hazardous materials coordinator — he said he looks forward to more time for biking, hiking, and celebrating his faith — and remains grateful for his hometown.  Valpo Life
  • Molly Billings, 18, was the lone lifeguard at Sand Creek Country Club on May 23 when a 16-year-old boy jumped off the diving board and began drowning, so she dove in to perform CPR until EMS arrived—he was given emergency treatment and is recovering well.  NWI.LIFE

  • In Porter County, Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor broke ground on a new warehouse (the first built in 25 years at the Lake Michigan port) on May 21. The Berth 2 Warehouse will offer customers greater supply chain flexibility and new export opportunities (it is scheduled to open early 2026).  Z107.1
  • In Porter County, Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor broke ground on its first new warehouse in 25 years at the Lake Michigan port during a ceremony on May 21. CEO Jody Peacock said the Berth 2 Warehouse will offer greater supply chain flexibility and new export opportunities while adding to the port’s 640,000 square feet of space and complementing plans for an international container terminal — set to open early in 2026.  XROCK 103.9

  • Wheeler High School held its National Honor Society ceremony on May 19 where incoming juniors and seniors signed their names and lit a candle to symbolize their commitment to leadership, character, service, and scholarship—students like Julia Pearce expressed pride in joining the group. With spring sports winding down, Boys’ Baseball will face Whiting High School on May 29 and Girls’ Softball will start Sectionals against Hebron while science teacher Dan Kenning led his team to a first-place finish at a state competition.  Valpo Life

  • Indiana Dunes State Park in Porter County is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year by offering the 3 Dunes Challenge that lets visitors earn a unique sticker when they complete the task—Indiana DNR said the state parks system was established in 1916 as a centennial gift to Hoosiers.  Indiana 105
