  • After serving in Iraq and helping with Hurricane Katrina relief, veteran Donald Stanley was injured on September 25, 2021, when a tractor-trailer tire hit him during his motorcycle trip at 7:04 p.m., leading to multiple surgeries and an eventual amputation below the knee. He found help through local organization Operation Charlie Bravo — which offers hands-on therapy to veterans — and now uses his recovery to inspire other veterans.  Valpo Life

CRIME NEWS

  • Valparaiso police arrested a man on a murder charge—officers had been investigating the 1900 block of Chicago Street on Monday night.  NWI Times
  • Michael Randall, 47, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting Kyle Cornelius, 36, 11 times on Feb 22 in Cornelius’ Lake Station home after a dispute over a $2,200 debt—his daughter found his body.  NWI Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary Koselke grew up in Michigan City and has taught cooking at Valparaiso Community Schools and the Porter County Career Center for about 20 years after moving here. She opened Blackbird Cafe to share her love of food and now uses lessons from her family to build strong bonds with her students — connecting cooking with community care.  Valpo Life
  • Porter County Education Services named Dr. Erin Hawkins as Executive Director for Special Education—she will begin her transition in June and officially take the role on July 1st, replacing Sandy Bodnar. Hawkins, who has led Student Support Services since 2019, will keep her job as Assistant Superintendent at Valparaiso Community Schools—expanding support across seven school districts.  NWI.LIFE
