- ➤ Gene Bokma celebrated her 100th birthday at AVIVA Valparaiso on June 6, making her the first resident to reach that milestone, and her party was attended by family + staff as well as Mayor Jon Costas, who presented her with a vase of flowers. The celebration also featured 100th birthday decorations and music from the 1920s as the community honored her long life. Valpo Life
- ➤ United Way Northwest Indiana will relaunch its Day of Caring event on August 1—presented by NIPSCO, the largest one-day volunteer effort that will unite helpers across five counties to boost local nonprofits, schools, and public spaces. The event will begin at 8 a.m. with a breakfast at Avalon Manor in Hobart and live music to start the day’s service projects. Valpo Life
- ➤ Former Lake County prosecutor Crawford (longtime defense attorney) died at 77, ending a lengthy career in local legal work. NWI Times
- ➤ The Valparaiso Parks Department opened a new inclusive playground addition to Foundation Meadows Park today during a ribbon cutting ceremony. Officials said the park is built to serve children of all abilities (and will soon host community events). NWI Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ During late spring, 430 students and 38 faculty participated in Days of Discovery at Purdue University Northwest, where undergraduate and graduate students presented research projects. PNW’s College of Technology and School of Engineering also hosted Technology Day and Senior Design events, with 60 students and 33 groups sharing capstone projects + innovations on campus. NWI.LIFE

- ➤ State Sen. Michael Bohacek filed a motion Friday asking the court to let him drive with an ignition interlock device while his operating while intoxicated case proceeds—he said a license suspension would be a hardship for his family. He was charged with three misdemeanor counts after a January traffic stop found his blood alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit. NWI Times
