COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Valparaiso launched a digital guide to help new and returning residents find water, trash pick-up, parks, transit and public art. Mayor Jon Costas and community engagement director Maggie Clifton said the guide, sent by postcard and available online, includes a welcome letter, neighborhood map and shortcuts to city departments—designed to help residents settle in quickly.  XROCK 103.9
  • On Friday, June 6, community members took part in a lip sync battle at Central Park William E. Urschel Pavilion — raising money to help kids attend summer camp — with lively acts including an ABBA routine and crowd voting that secured $1,263 for the program.  Valpo Life

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ivy Tech Community College’s State Board of Trustees voted unanimously to freeze tuition and mandatory fees for the 2025—26 and 2026—27 academic years — a decision following Governor Braun’s request to keep education affordable. The move is part of Ivy Tech’s broader efforts to remove financial barriers and support workforce-aligned education for students.  XROCK 103.9
  • On June 3, the Legacy Foundation held its annual scholarship awards dinner at the Croatian Center Banquet Hall in Merrillville to honor students with more than $1.3 million in aid. The event has grown over seven years from over 500 applications and was supported by local donors such as the Lilly Endowment and Horizon Bank — funding both high school and college studies.  NWI.LIFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Valparaiso is launching an aggressive schedule of infrastructure projects this season—an effort that includes $9.4 million for road resurfacing, 62 lane miles of paving, and testing a new road preservation method. The city is also upgrading water and sewer systems with funding from a matching grant and local funds while partnering with Porter County for key roadway improvements.  NWI.LIFE
