  • On Wednesday, June 11, veterans from the region attended the fourth annual Military Stand Down at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso, where VNA Hospice Northwest Indiana connected them with over 50 vendors offering food, prizes, and essential services. Volunteer coordinator Alexandra Szopinski said the event let veterans, especially those under-resourced, access support services—an effort backed by local nonprofits and community groups.  Valpo Life

  • On June 11th, Oak Partners hosted its annual Sunset Social event at Journeyman Distillery in Valparaiso — over 400 clients and advisors gathered in the East Room for hors d'oeuvres, cocktails and live acoustic music by local performer Angelo Cicco.  NWI.LIFE
  • Larson-Danielson Construction, a 117-year-old firm, was honored in the first half of 2025 as the Best Commercial Construction Firm for both new work and remodeling in Northwest Indiana—an award voted on by Northwest Indiana Business Magazine readers—and its in-house firm Facet Architecture won its third award for best commercial architectural design. Both were celebrated at the CAF/NWIBRT Awards Banquet on May 8 when the HealthLinc medical office building project was named Commercial Project of the Year.  NWI.LIFE

  • Michigan City police arrested 17 people and seized nine guns + various illegal drugs during Memorial Day weekend as part of their proactive operation to stem violent crime.  NWI Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bishop Noll Institute has restructured its leadership roles by appointing Renee Nagdeman as Vice President of Finance—reflecting her 21-year tenure—and Eddie Limón as Vice President of Advancement. Communications Coordinator Jennifer Florek has been promoted to Associate Director of Advancement, and President Paul Mullaney said the changes will secure long-term financial stability and support growing enrollment.  NWI.LIFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority announced its updated 2025 plan to invest $5 million in a new Land Development Entity that will clean up brownfields for redevelopment—aimed at encouraging private investment. The plan also calls for modernizing shoreline infrastructure and studying rail and airport projects to boost local growth.  NWI.LIFE

HEALTH NEWS

  • On June 1, the garden outside Powers Health Rehabilitation Center hosted National Cancer Survivors Day where survivors, caregivers and healthcare workers enjoyed a grilled lunch, music and heartfelt stories.
