BUSINESS NEWS

  • Doral Renewables has hired Virginia-based Bechtel to build the next phase of the Mammoth Solar farm in Northwest Indiana, a project expected to eventually power around 200,000 homes. The work—set for Starke and Pulaski counties—will boost Indiana’s solar capacity by 20% and create over 1,200 jobs while still allowing local farming to continue.  NWI Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several Purdue University Northwest student organizations earned awards at regional, national and international competitions in late spring, with teams achieving top finishes in surveying, concrete canoe and steel bridge challenges & winning a Most Improved Performance Award at the Human Exploration Rover Challenge. A surveying team qualified for its third national competition appearance in late June, while four computer science students earned third place at an international quantum hackathon at Yale.  NWI.LIFE
  • Purdue University Northwest students in the College of Engineering and Sciences earned awards in regional, national and international competitions this spring— their achievements included top finishes in surveying, Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge events. The NASA Rover Club won a Most Improved Performance Award at the HERC event and received a $500 prize while four Computer Science students finished third overall at the YQuantum Hackathon— setting the stage for future projects.  Valpo Life

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In Valparaiso, the city announced it will invest $9.4 million in its largest-ever road resurfacing program to improve 62 lane miles, plus 40 miles of crack sealing and over one mile of sidewalks. The plan will also test a new road preservation method on 3.5 lane miles and include a city-county resurfacing project for Hayes Leonard and Bartz Roads and an extension of Goodrich Road with a new pathway.  Z107.1

  • A new owner has bought the long-vacant Marquette Mall and Office Tower in Michigan City—raising hopes that the property will be redeveloped soon.  NWI Times
  • CoAction announced plans to sell its Valparaiso Housing Office because rising costs and aging infrastructure made it hard to maintain, but the organization will continue operating other locations in Valpo and Northwest Indiana. Sale proceeds will fund new housing units and a modern office hub — the transition will happen gradually as CoAction remains committed to supporting over 1,000 local families.  Valpo Life
