  • Highland resident Bill Riley collects and fixes bicycles for sale or trade to help his neighbors—his front yard is filled with dozens of bikes that show his commitment to giving back.  NWI Times

CRIME NEWS

  • State Sen. Michael Bohacek pleaded guilty to a DUI in Michigan City in January when he was nearly four times over the legal limit, was not arrested during session due to legal rules, and received a suspended one-year jail sentence, a 20-day driving suspension, and must complete substance abuse evaluation and therapy.  NWI Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • BP Whiting Refinery has resumed full operations after last week's storms caused flooding that forced several production units offline+ gas prices in Northwest Indiana spiked sharply. The 136-year-old plant near Lake Michigan now supplies gas, diesel and jet fuel to seven states.  NWI Times

FINANCE NEWS

  • Attorney Christopher Yugo answered questions on estate planning by explaining that you can add a beneficiary on a car title once you have the title and follow the BMV’s transfer on death steps—if the car is financed, you may not be able to make the change. He also said that naming a beneficiary on a life insurance policy helps avoid probate delays and creditor claims.  NWI Times

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Northwest Indiana's housing market grew with closed sales rising 8% to 762 and a median price of $286,000, while county data showed Lake County's new listings up 9.2% with a 12% rise in pending sales, Porter County a 23.9% surge in closed sales, and LaPorte County a 16.4% increase in new listings in July. Indiana added 10,115 new listings in July, which pushed the housing inventory to a five-year high.  NWI Times
