  • St. John's long-vacant Kmart is set to become a Jewel-Osco — a change that Town Council President Michael Bouvat called a monumental new chapter for the town. The project is expected to open in coming months as the community looks forward to new shopping options.  NWI Times
  • Robbie Guthrie needed a portable shed six years ago and found the perfect custom Yoder structure at AJ Portable Buildings, which led him to become a sales associate at the Cedar Lake and Lowell locations. He now helps customers design projects and check out completed buildings—seeing his work in neighborhoods around Valparaiso.  NWI.LIFE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Porter County Museum is featuring the Life Work exhibit—highlighting local artists Hazel and Vin Hannell and displaying over 170 art pieces that connect visitors with the county’s history. Executive director Kevin Pazour said weekly tours this month and a special morning tour in October will give the community a closer look at the art and its storied past.  Valpo Life

  • A mother-daughter duo from Porter County claimed a $150,000 Powerball win from a ticket sold at Strack — Van Til in Chesterton for Monday's drawing.  NWI Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Crossroads Chamber hosted its first-ever 7th and 8th grade Career Exploration event at Great Lakes Sports Hub from 9 a.m. to noon where nearly 600 middle school students learned about alternative career paths through hands-on activities and insights from almost 30 local businesses—helping them see options beyond a traditional four-year college route.  NWI.LIFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Valparaiso is inviting residents to join one of five focus groups in September at the City Services Business Office on Billings Street—participants will share feedback on the current recycling program and help shape its future.  XROCK 103.9
  • Motorists near I-94 at State Road 51 in Lake Station are advised of upcoming lane closures. INDOT says alternating overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. will begin on Monday September 8th for two nights to set a barrier wall — after that, the left inside shoulder between Clay Street and the Indiana Toll Road will close for bridge work through October — with southbound work continuing into mid-December and northbound work set for 2026.  Indiana 105
