COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Horizon Cares Day — Horizon Bank will close its branches on September 16 so that nearly 800 advisors can volunteer with over 80 local nonprofits. The bank will also give awards to advisors who lead with dedication in their communities.  NWI.LIFE

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Chicago, Ft. Wayne & Eastern Railroad train partially derailed late Saturday night in Valparaiso when operators applied emergency brakes after spotting someone on the tracks—no injuries were reported and crews had the line fully operational by Monday morning.  Lakeshore Public Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Governor Mike Braun said a study from the Indiana Business Research Center confirmed that Indiana’s READI regions, including the northwest area with Porter County, are strong and ready to shape the state’s economy. The report was released last week as part of a plan under an Executive Order to set unified regional boundaries by year-end 2025—proving that local leaders built these regions through real collaboration.  XROCK 103.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Crossroads Chamber hosted its first Your Future, Your Choice event — a career exploration for 7th and 8th graders at Great Lakes Sports Hub in Crown Point to address new Indiana high school diploma rules and promote trade training options. Nearly 600 students from seven middle schools attended while local industry experts explained early career steps.  XROCK 103.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Valparaiso Police Department promoted Sean Liesenfelt to Sergeant today—he has ten years of police experience, including three years with the department and seven with Indiana University Police.  Valpo Life

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Don Quijote Restaurant in Valparaiso, VNA Hospice NWI held its annual dinner to support care for patients without enough coverage and to collect grocery donations for local residents in need during the Christmas season - the event also honored 55-year commitment to compassionate care. Sponsored by Carlos Rivero and Elena Jambrina, the dinner brought community members together to strengthen connections and support vital hospice programs.  Valpo Life
