COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NIPSCO announced additional energy assistance programs for income eligible customers struggling with gas bills—these include the Hardship, SERV, and SILVER programs that offer a one-time credit of up to $550 and remain open for applications until funds run out or May 31. Eligible customers are urged to apply online to prepare for the colder months when gas usage increases.  Valpo Life

  • Arrenello’s Pizza is opening its first new location in 20 years. The chain—known for adding restaurants only every couple decades—prepares to bring a new dining option to the area.  NWI Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi’s Four Winds Casinos is hosting Oktoberfest all month with dining options and promotions including Bonus Spin Xtreme, Rev Up The Fun on October 12, $150,000 Sweet Ride on October 18, and Senior Day Drawings on October 22 and 23—buffets featuring German fare are offered at New Buffalo from today through October 4 and at South Bend through October 5.   • South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority held its first Tourism Today event yesterday at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond where guests had coffee and breakfast — President Phil Taillon and Visit Indy CEO Leonard Hoops explained how tourism can boost local growth and invite further business in the area.  Valpo Life

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Municipalities and counties can apply for matching grants from Community Crossings to fund local road projects—applications are due by 4 p.m. Central time on Oct. 31.  NWI Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. William Bae joined the Franciscan Physician Network and is accepting new patients at the Woodland Cancer Care Center in Michigan City today—he earned his degree at Yonsei University College of Medicine and completed his residency at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. He treats colorectal, lung—and genitourinary cancers while offering in-person and virtual visits.  Valpo Life

SPORTS NEWS

  • Valpo Athletics exceeded its revenue goals for the 2024-2025 academic year by increasing sponsorship revenue by 40 percent, gameday revenue by 27 percent, and fundraising by 9 percent. The department inked its largest corporate sponsorship with UChicago Medicine and received gifts from over 1,000 donors on Valpo Day to support its future student-athlete programs.  Valpo Life
