COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way Northwest Indiana presented a $10,000 check to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana to support access to healthy food and fight hunger across the region. The donation shows the two groups are uniting to help neighbors in need.  Valpo Life
  • The Winamac Old Auto Club marked its 75th anniversary at Team Chevrolet Valparaiso on October 4 — the gathering brought together car lovers who admired both old and modern vehicles and enjoyed community time. The club, which works to restore classic cars and host local events, said it will soon hold trunk or treats in Chesterton, Portage, and Crown Point.  Valpo Life

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Some Pizza Hut restaurants in Northwest Indiana are set to reopen after they closed suddenly last year — local customers can look forward to new dining options when they do.  NWI Times
  • Daifuku Intralogistics America opened an expanded manufacturing facility in Hobart on October 2 that doubled its production capacity to meet growing demand. The company invested $35 million in the project and now employs over 400 people—expected to rise to 800, boosting local manufacturing.  Valpo Life

  • The century-old Hoosier Theatre ended screening first-run films today but will keep hosting concerts as it seeks a buyer — the venue shifts its focus amid a new phase in its history.  NWI Times

  • Officials are working to bring shipbuilding to Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor—plans are still in early stages.  NWI Times
  • NIRPC has been awarded a $70,000 federal grant to implement its Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy—aiming to strengthen the economy and create jobs in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties.  Lakeshore Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Valparaiso University received a $4 million donation from alumni Joyce Hagen and Donald Fites—funds set aside for a new health professions building on the northwest corner of Morthland Drive and Study Road. The three-story facility will have labs, exam rooms, and learning spaces for nursing students—part of a $90 million project.  Lakeshore Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday, about 100 supporters gathered to protest Powers Health’s termination of cardiologist Dr. David Stewart—patients said he had been very human in his care, and they voiced their concerns after his dismissal earlier this month.  NWI Times
