COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Northwest Indiana nonprofit Paying It Forward announced plans to add new services in 2026—bringing back its warm meal program and opening a new office—to help community members during the holiday season.  Lakeshore Public Media
  • On October 19, Associated Pediatricians hosted its annual Trunk-or-Treat at its Valparaiso location where hundreds of children and families dressed in costumes to enjoy treats and community fun. The event also featured a coffee truck donating proceeds to the Spina Bifida Association — a memorial dance by the Nasty Women of Porter County further honored a late member.  NWI.LIFE
  • Valparaiso will host Porter County Trunk Or Treat on October 30 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Porter County DCS Office — families are invited to enjoy music, candy and themed fun in their best costumes.  PanoramaNOW
  • Zao Island partnered with Family Express at the 21st Annual Family Festival to host a drone show that celebrated Family Express's 50th anniversary and served more than 2,500 families with mini golf and giveaways.   • Indiana Beverage, a family-owned distributor headquartered in Valparaiso, is hiring driver trainees, warehouse pickers, and merchandisers in South Bend and La Porte County to support its long-standing service in the community—candidates can receive hands-on CDL training and a full benefits package after 60 days. The company expects employees to stay for at least two years to benefit from its training program and grow within the business.  Valpo Life

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rocky Horror Picture Show, celebrating 50 years, will be shown on Halloween at Avenue 912 in Griffith — where performers pantomime key scenes — to keep the cult film's tradition alive from Valpo.  NWI Times
  • The Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Valparaiso will open its annual Holiday Artisan Market on Friday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.—the Gallery Shop will expand into the main lobby until Jan. 2 and a Sip & Style event offering handmade wearables will run on Nov. 22 and 23 with snacks and a cash bar.  Valpo Life

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices increased across the Midwest after a fire at the BP Whiting Refinery disrupted operations last week—prices averaged $2.81 in Lake, $2.97 in Porter, and $3.03 in LaPorte counties, and experts expect further rises as stations adjust to higher wholesale costs. Overall, the incident has pushed local fuel prices up as refineries work to return to full production.  Lakeshore Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Valparaiso Police Department, Porter County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police will lead a School Bus Stop Arm Violation Awareness Campaign from October 20 through October 24 during School Bus Safety Week—Valparaiso Community Schools is working with them to educate drivers on the risks of passing buses with extended stop arms and to protect children boarding and leaving buses.  Z107.1
  • Andrean High School students held Dig Pink Night on October 2 to raise more than $520 for the Franciscan Women’s Health Center and wore pink hoodies to support breast cancer awareness while senior Evangeline Rodriguez set a new cross country record on September 9 at Marian. The school will host a Kairos retreat from November 4-7 and a theatre production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from November 21-23—events that show the strong spirit of the school community.  NWI.LIFE
  • Morton High School's Hammond Arts and Performance Academy revived Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Jr. with shows on October 10-11 at 7 p.m. and October 12 at 2 p.m., and the school will host a Trunk-or-Treat on October 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Zlotnik Field where athletic teams share candy and school spirit—teacher Veronica Prieto and football player Davion Terry were featured for their inspiring roles in the school's creative and athletic programs.  NWI.LIFE

HEALTH NEWS

  • This past weekend, Coach Misty Walker began a free six week training program to help local residents prepare for the Valpo Turkey Trot 5K. The group run had many new runners, including Torie Surprise who felt encouraged to improve her fitness—reflecting local support for health initiatives.  Valpo Life

  • Three McColly Real Estate brokers were named finalists at the 14th Influential Women Awards Banquet on September 25 at Avalon Manor in Merrillville. Jennifer Miga was a finalist for Influential Woman of the Year in Real Estate while Alexa Hosier and Elizabeth Velazquez were named finalists for Up-and-Coming Woman of the Year (their honors highlight the firm's strong team culture).  Valpo Life

SPORTS NEWS

  • Trevor Faughnder, a Valparaiso High senior, uses his punting and kicking skills to raise funds for Count the Kicks, a campaign that helps prevent stillbirths by encouraging expecting parents to track baby movements via a free app. He, who beat early medical challenges (his mom’s faith and a specialist’s retest saved him), plans to play college football as he builds community support and makes a lasting impact.  Valpo Life
