- ➤ On Friday, October 24, Belvedere Senior Housing hosted its annual trunk-or-treat where residents and community members enjoyed candy, costumes, and free food. The event saw nearly 500 pounds of donated candy—highlighting Belvedere’s care for local families and friends. NWI.LIFE
- ➤ Lerner and Rowe Gives Back donated $2,500 to finish supporting United Way Northwest Indiana’s Day of Caring on August 1st—an event that brought over 650 volunteers together to complete more than 80 projects—and helped expand year-round volunteer opportunities in the region. Valpo Life

- ➤ Portage-based Tanco Terminals is expanding its operations with a new liquid barge terminal at a southern Indiana port along the Ohio River — the expansion is expected to boost the company’s shipping capacity. NWI Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Wheeler High School’s cross country season ended on October 25 when six runners—including Rowan Kruszka, Evelyn Kohne, Juan Carmona, Andrew Camp, Chase Mattull, and Lincoln Stachowiak—advanced from the sectional championship. The school will host a Red Cross blood drive on October 29 as part of National Honors Society efforts while returning guidance counselor Kim Dobson supports students on and off the track. Valpo Life
- ➤ Grethe Hystad, an associate professor at Purdue University Northwest, was chosen to join a NASA project to study new ways to find life in our solar system using computer learning. She will work on the five-year study — which earned a $5 million grant — and plans to bring her work into the classroom. Valpo Life
- ➤ In Valparaiso, Valparaiso University and Harper College signed an agreement so that students who earn their Associates in Engineering Science can transfer to the College of Engineering if they meet the academic requirements. The agreement lets students study civil, computer, mechanical, and electrical engineering — giving them hands-on learning with other departments. Z107.1
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County announced that Daylight Savings will change the compost site hours—Valparaiso will operate 8am to 4pm Monday through Saturday beginning November 3. Portage and Boone Grove sites will keep their current hours until winter changes start in December. Lakeshore Public Media
- ➤ Valparaiso invites residents to share their input on a master plan for the eastside between 500 North and 400 North. The Open House will be held at City Hall (166 Lincolnway) on November 5 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm after Browning Day is re-engaged following a pause after a 2023 sports park cancellation. Valpo Life
