  • South Shore Line expanded its Kids Ride Free program to cover all trains this holiday season. From Friday, Dec. 19 through Friday, Jan. 2, up to three children (13 and under) may ride free when with a parent, with holiday schedules on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.  Lakeshore Public Media

  • Purdue Northwest is preparing the Roberts Impact Lab in downtown Hammond to host quantum and applied research initiatives in fall 2026 with a $10 million funding boost to renovate workspaces.   • Liberty Township is building a new $4.5M fire station with expanded bays and living quarters for public CPR classes. Winter work continues to boost safety in the community.  NWI Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Pure Fat Loss Challenge Kick Off Event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 27, 5:30 - 8:15 at the Dean and Barbara White Community Center at 6600 Broadway in Merrillville, half a mile from I-65 and Hwy 30, with free body stat analyses. The 12-week program starts Jan. 1.  PanoramaNOW
  • Earlier this month, Powers Health hosted its annual Angel Tree of Lights ceremony at St. Mary Medical Center to honor loved ones and raise funds for the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund; the event supported health care students and comforted local families.  Valpo Life
  • Powers Health hosted its annual Lights of Life Ceremony (honoring loved ones and raising cancer awareness) at Community Hospital earlier this month. Nearly 100 community members donated online to light the tree with lavender and pink lights, and it will remain lit through the end of the year.  NWI.LIFE
